The rocky terrain and high altitudes provide perfect conditions for strong thermals, making Goms the north-south gateway through the central alpine ridge. The potentially strong thermal conditions in spring and summer require a detailed knowledge of the local area, particularly when considering landing sites. Some super easy winter sites can be very risky in the height of the thermal season.
Choosing safe conditions and times to attempt traversing the high alpine passes or enjoying the winter flights above the lower level atmospheric inversions mean that flying in Goms cannot be guaranteed. Its proximity to Valais and Central Schweiz, however, mean that there are usually alternative possibilities nearby.
